The U.K. tax authority has given taxpayers named in the Pandora Papers — among the world’s biggest leaks of financial information — a deadline to settle their outstanding tax debts, or risk harsh penalties.
On June 5, 2023, HM Revenue & Customs began sending letters to hundreds of U.K. residents implicated in the 2021 ICIJ investigation, which revealed how the rich and powerful use offshore tax havens to hide and move their money.
“Tax evasion is increasingly global — but, unfortunately for tax criminals, so is HMRC’s reach, accessing data and intelligence through international collaboration,” Kelly Telford, HMRC’s deputy director for offshore risk, said in a statement.
Recipients of the letters have 30 days to report taxable offshore income and gains or face fines of up to 200% of any tax owed. The agency warned dishonesty could lead to prosecution.
But as the U.K. ramps up its response, Europe risks stalling, with conservative lawmakers voting last week to block a parliamentary push for a minimum capital gains tax rate. A separate directive to crack down on shell companies is also stuck in negotiations.

There again one can appreciate the Carrot rather than the Stick approach, as the Term in Office is likely too short to show the benefits of prudence, or sensible spending etc.
But in the most corrupt set ups the Megalomaniac Despotic Ruler’s stick is replaced with a more potent killing weaponry and those only too willing to follow such assassination orders!
Or the assailant needs simply be ordered to make sure the opponent disappears to some distant Gulag Prison, likely to die out of sight and out on mind of the World, who have more important matters to worry about e.g. their rising cost of living? Tell that to the imprisoned opponent whose living has now been defencelessly terminated. And the person who ordered the eradication is still part of the living and most likely bleeding his Nation’s Coffers dry as funds get transferred to his and his cronies accounts across the four corners of their ‘Bolt Hole’ World!
